DID YOU KNOW?.. NUTS

DID YOU KNOW?.. NUTS

Nuts are a concentrated and convenient source of nutritional greatness. Recent studies indicate that nut eaters take in around 5g more fibre, 260mg more potassium, 73mg more calcium, 95mg more magnesium, 4mg more vitamin E and 157mg less sodium than their non-nut eating counterparts. Further studies reveal that consuming a handful of nuts at least 4 times a week results in a 37% reduced risk of coronary heart disease and a 31% reduced risk of type 2 diabetes. The combination of protein, fats and fibre in nuts help to keep blood glucose levels balanced and keeps hunger at bay resulting in us consuming less calories in a day so as long as we stick to the little and often recommendation, weight gain is unlikely. Nutritionist and author Fiona Kirk says: “Many people avoid or limit their consumption of nuts because they believe them to be ‘fattening’ or ‘unhealthy’ due to their fat content. But having fat in our diet is essential for brain, nerve, heart, hormone and bone health and around 80% of the fat in most nuts is monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fat – the ‘healthy’ fats. In a nutshell, where better to get a fabulous source of protein, health-enhancing fats, fibre and a wealth of vitamins, minerals and protective plant chemicals in a portable snack to keep energy levels topped up than in a nut? Just a Handful of Nuts a Day

Just a Handful of Nuts a Day

Following the Government’s Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) issuing their final report on carbohydrates (a major source of energy in our diet) on 17 June, we were delighted to learn that when it comes to ‘guilt free snacking’, typical daily snacks permitted by the British Nutrition Foundation (who helped draft the Report) would include a handful of nuts, such as Brazil nuts. Kate Gaskell from Liberation Foods comments, “Nuts provide a convenient and healthy snacking option – research has shown that eating just a handful of nuts every day is massively beneficial to your health including reducing heart disease and keeping you slim”. The SACN were asked by the Department of Health and the Food Standards Agency to examine the latest evidence on the links between consumption of carbohydrates, sugars, starch and fibre and a range of health outcomes – such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, bowel health and tooth decay – to ensure the government’s position on consumption was up to date. In light of these findings, SACN recommended free sugars account for no more than 5% of daily energy intake – down from the previous recommendation of 10% – (approx. 30g (7 tsp) for an adult per day). One can of Coca Cola contains 35g, or 9 tsp of sugar! READ MORE Read the full SACN Report HERE...
